David Cameron
PhD, DCPsychol, CPsychol, AFBPsS
I have a passion for and have been working in the statutory and voluntary mental health sector for approaching thirty-five years, motivated and inspired by helping people see, work towards and realise their hitherto unrealised potential. Put simply, being the best, you can be.
I graduated with an Honours degree in Applied Psychology from the University of Ulster In 1991 from where I went on to complete a PhD examining what helps and hinders individuals living with and recovering from psychosis. Related to the latter I was one of the founding members of the service user led Irish Recovery Network.
Thereafter, I completed dual doctoral clinical trainings in Psychology and latterly Psychotherapy, respectively at Middlesex University and the Metanoia Psychotherapy Institute in London. In 2015 I undertook a one-year modular group psychotherapy training program with the American Group Psychotherapy Association under scholarship with the Washington School of Psychiatry. Finally, as one of the original Sangha (secular members) of the Belfast Black Mountain Zen Centre, founded in 1995 I have a long-term interest in experientially practising and applying the eastern psychological teachings and principles of mindfulness and compassionate inquiry to understand the nature of human suffering and how to ease this suffering. I am trained in Mindfulness Based Addiction and Recovery (MBAR) and in 2022 completed eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing training (EMDR).
I have also worked as a senior academic lecturer/associate lecturer in several universities including Queen’s University Belfast and Dublin City University, integral in developing and teaching into Doctoral clinical training programs. Between 2014 and 2021 I was a Senior part-time Associate Lecturer with New Buckinghamshire University and taught into a satellite MSc psychotherapy program in mental health for core multidisciplinary NHS professionals. For the past twelve years I have been Consultant Clinical Lead Psychologist of Inspire, one of the longest established and now largest mental health, learning disability and addictions charities in Ireland. I am registered with and hold full clinical registrations with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy. I am a Chartered Psychologist and an Associate Fellow with the British Psychological Society on the Register of Psychologists Specialising in Psychotherapy. Finally, I am a full clinical member of the Metanoia Psychotherapy Institute, London.
